Who We Are Founded in 2018 Intersect Madrid is a grassroots organisation that aims to open up the discussion on issues of social injustice and discrimination in formal education. What we do Our mission is to create a community of educators that are motivated to create educational spaces that promote justice, anti-racism and combat discrimination. To foster this community we empower educators by organizing training workshops, events and resources grounded in anti-bias ant-racist education. Training and Professional Development Workshops We offer training workshops and professional development programs that equip educators with the tools and strategies needed to foster inclusive, equitable learning environments. Consultation Services for Schools and Organizations We partner with schools and organizations as expert educators, offering tailored consultations, resources, and proven strategies to drive meaningful personal and professional growth in diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Community Activities and Events We organize free and accessible training workshops for educators online and in Madrid for educators to access training without a paywall. Support Our Work Intersect Madrid, we take innovative action to address inequality and injustice in education. Our approach centers communities, people and lived experiences to create meaningful and sustainable change. Our impact is seen in both local communities and schools, as much as within individual educators, students and learners. There are many ways to support our work. We are grateful for any amount of money you are willing to donate. As a growing grassroots organization we fund our free public workshops by conducting paid training for schools and institutions. Our People Shanah Khan (she/her/ella Director I’ve been part of Intersect Madrid since 2019, first as a team member then later as Director. As a trainer, workshop facilitator, and consultant, I instruct on anti-racist teaching and fostering inclusive practices. I’m Scottish-Pakistani, born and raised in Glasgow, and have a MA in International Relations specializing in intersectionality, anti-racist studies, and feminism. I have a substack, Maneuvering , where I write on my lived experience and feminism. Cristina Castillo (she/her/ella Educational Content Coordinator I joined Intersect Madrid in 2019, bringing a deep passion for education and activism. Born in Guatemala to a Guatemalan father and Puerto Rican mother, I completed my degree in Elementary Education in Florida, and moved to Madrid in 2015, where I spent several years teaching in various schools. I am dedicated to fostering inclusive and compassionate learning environments for all students. I specialize in incorporating anti-racist, anti-bias pedagogy into elementary education, guiding teachers to center the student experience in every element of the education. My mission is to nurture kind, socially conscious young minds who are empowered to understand and positively impact the world around them. Cynthia Garcia Fernandez (she/her/ella Communications Coordinator Hello! I’m Afro-Spanish born and raised in Madrid, specializing in journalism and digital communication. My experience in the area of communication has been intertwined within social justice field, as I have previously volunteered with NGOs and social organizations which has developed my deep interest in social justice, anti-racism and intersectional feminism. Genevieve Peattie (she/her/ella Founder & Strategic Advisor Genevieve is the founder of Intersect Madrid and started developing the initiative in 2017 to make positive changes in schools, with the aim of creating spaces where we could problem solve and think collectively about how to transform classrooms into sites of learning that were free from oppression. Genevieve is a proud Londoner with British and Jamaican heritage and currently works as a project officer in local government. Her work in the sector so far has ranged from street homelessness and exploitation to youth engagement and public health. She continues to advocate for social justice and intersectional approaches to public service in her daily practice, as well as volunteering virtually in the Intersect Madrid organising committee.
